VW Beetle at Joshua Tree
July 29, 2008
Was shooting some landscapes at Joshua Tree National Park and when finished I turned around to get into the car and there was the most beautiful light. There is something special about desert light as it is so clear and smog free. When the sun goes down in most places it gets dark really fast, but in the desert it just seems to hang in twilight glow for what seems like ages. So turned my camera around and shot a time exposure with the head and tail lights on.
It was a beautiful still evening and I could hear the coyotes crying in the distance. We are so fortunate to have places near Los Angeles where you can really get away from the noise and hustle and just be still and quiet with your thoughts.
Used a Nikon D100 for this shot and converted to sepia in Photoshop.

Walking in the leaves.
July 26, 2008
This was a promotional shot of one of the actors in a TV series filmed in Toronto, Canada. The show was called “The Campbell’s” and was about Sottish immigrants to Canada during the early 1800’s. As the crew was setting up for their next shot I had a few minutes with the boy and asked him to walk through some fall leaves. It was used for advertising and marketing the show and an editor of a photography magazine saw it and contacted me to use on the cover of the magazine.
Used a Bronica ETRS medium format camera with Kodak transparency film and scanned on a Nikon Coolscan 9000.
IRON MAN
July 25, 2008
Was driving through a small town in Oklahoma and saw this clever bit of art in front of an iron fabricators shop and just had to stop and take a picture. Used a Nikon F2 Photomic film body and good old Kodachrome transparency film. The date on the slide indicates that Kodak processed it on March 3, 1982 and the slide still looks very good and with very little grain compared to the Ektachrome type films of that day. Scanned it with a Nikon Coolscan 9000.
Colonial Woman
July 24, 2008
This was an outtake from an assignment of a woman dressed in period Colonial American clothes in front of a historic building. She had such a friendly demeanor that I asked her to pose for some extra pictures. Used a Bronica ETRS with 150mm lens and Fuji transparency film and scanned with a Nikon Coolscan 9000. Had some nice soft lighting that day so didn’t use any fill light or reflectors.
Professional Cyclist George Hincapie
July 23, 2008
I used to do some bike racing back in the late 80’s to early 90’s in Virginia. Our club Tidewater Bicycle Association used to sponsor a few big races every year and this is a pro race they had in a very rural area of Virginia Beach and Chesapeake. Of all the cycling pictures I have taken this is probably my favorite. You can’t recognize him in the picture because his head is down but the cyclist is George Hincapie.
He was riding for EDS at the time and had broken away from the field and was powering through the woods with a neutral support motorcycle carrying spare wheels to aid in case of a flat. Back in the distance you can make out the headlights of another motorcycle and the field was hidden just around the bend in the road.
Since that time George has had a pretty distinguished cycling career riding on various teams such as the now defunct Discovery Channel team where he rode to support Lance Armstrong and his record breaking Tour de France victories and now he is riding the Tour with the Columbia Sportswear team. Just saw him this morning on the climb up L’Alpe d’Huez and wish him a safe tour to the end in Paris Sunday.
To take this picture I was riding in the officials lead car and either standing up through the sunroof or hanging out the window. Used a Nikon F4 film camera and Kodak b&w film and don’t remember what lens i used. Negatives were hand processed in Rodinal by me and scanned with a Nikon Coolscan 9000.
I Shot The Sheriff
July 22, 2008
This was used as a large photograph in an ad for a sheriff’s election campaign. Used a Bronica ETRS and 150mm lens and Kodak b&w film. The hat has a lot of texture that I wanted to bring out but didn’t want anything too dramatic so used available light along with a Speedotron head in a softbox on one side and a sheet of white foam core as a reflector on the other.
