Shot this for an animal shelter. The art director brought the turtle, rabbit, and a cockatiel to the shoot and we tried all three together but found it difficult to get a good shot. For some reason the bird was freaked out by the turtle and didn’t want to even see it. So we tried putting the rabbit between them so they could not see each other, but still it looked more like a fight club than a rescue ad. So we narrowed it down to just the rabbit and the turtle and got something nice.
The background was a very large canvas that an art director painted a gray swirly abstract design on and was shot with a Bronica ETRS medium format camera. Used a Speedotron strobe in a softbox above the animals for lighting, and the background sweep was far enough from the subjects to give a nice gradation to it.
