Professional Cyclist George Hincapie

I used to do some bike racing back in the late 80’s to early 90’s in Virginia. Our club Tidewater Bicycle Association used to sponsor a few big races every year and this is a pro race they had in a very rural area of Virginia Beach and Chesapeake. Of all the cycling pictures I have taken this is probably my favorite. You can’t recognize him in the picture because his head is down but the cyclist is George Hincapie.

He was riding for EDS at the time and had broken away from the field and was powering through the woods with a neutral support motorcycle carrying spare wheels to aid in case of a flat. Back in the distance you can make out the headlights of another motorcycle and the field was hidden just around the bend in the road.

Since that time George has had a pretty distinguished cycling career riding on various teams such as the now defunct Discovery Channel team where he rode to support Lance Armstrong and his record breaking Tour de France victories and now he is riding the Tour with the Columbia Sportswear team. Just saw him this morning on the climb up L’Alpe d’Huez and wish him a safe tour to the end in Paris Sunday.

To take this picture I was riding in the officials lead car and either standing up through the sunroof or hanging out the window. Used a Nikon F4 film camera and Kodak b&w film and don’t remember what lens i used. Negatives were hand processed in Rodinal by me and scanned with a Nikon Coolscan 9000.
